Desire of Kwangju Resistance Fighters Have to be Fulfilled: KCNA Commentary

Pyongyang, May 23 (KCNA) -- It has been 37 years since the Kwangju Popular Uprising in south Korea but independence, democracy and reunification so much wished for by those resistance fighters have not yet come true.

The U.S. domination and interference in south Korea have deepened and pro-U.S. fascist forces are still going on the rampage.

The remnants of the pro-U.S. stooges have gone desperate to evade the responsibility for the Kwangju massacre, while describing the uprising as "riot of insurgents". They even make such anti-DPRK rhetoric about "north's special unit's intervention in the Kwangju incident", inciting north-south confrontation.

This is a total denial of the patriotic Kwangju Popular Uprising and a desperate bid of the reactionaries of history to bring back the dark fascist era.

The uprising is remembered by the Koreans as an anti-U.S. and anti-fascist resistance for justice and democracy in which a do-or-die battle was fought for independence, democracy and national reunification against the colonial and military fascist rule by the U.S. imperialists and their stooges.

The souls of the resistance fighters who laid down their precious lives for the new politics and new social system still cry for a complete end to the lamentable colonial rule by the U.S. imperialists as well as to the pro-U.S. traitors.

But the pro-U.S. conservatives and descendents of the "yusin" dictatorship serving the U.S., which manipulated the unprecedented Kwangju Massacre, are still going wild to stamp out the patriotic souls of the martyrs.

The puppet conservative forces prevented "March for Dear Ones", a song symbolic of the struggle for democracy, from being played at memorial services for the resistance fighters under absurd pretexts of "division of public opinion" and "symbol of the pro-north forces seeking regime change".

No matter how desperately the group of conservatives may try to distort the truth of history, they can never do away with the souls of the resistance fighters.

The way for giving vent to the pent-up wrath of the fighters and sincerely consoling their souls is to completely eliminate the pro-U.S. traitorous forces in south Korea and put an end to the colonial domination and rule by the U.S.

South Koreans from all walks of life including youth and students should intensify the struggle for independence against the U.S. and conservatives to have the desire of fallen Kwangju fighters fulfilled without fail. -0-
